ABSTRACT
This is a hands-on demonstration of the VA VistA Hospital Information System.
The VistA hospital information system supports a multimedia electronic patient record and provides order entry, image acquisition, image storage, image viewing, and result reporting functionality. VistA uses DICOM with to acquire images not only in radiology, but also in dentistry, endoscopy, ophthalmology, cardiology, and other areas. These interfaces are based upon the DICOM Modality Worklist and Storage specifications of the HIMSS/RSNA Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise Technical Framework. Every one of the 170 VA Medical Centers now supports digital imaging and over 130 million digital images have been acquired.
The VA is developing telemedicine applications for VistA. The goal is be able to remotely read an imaging study and produce a diagnostic report from anywhere in the VA or from one of our commercial reading partners. This will be used for both radiology and non-radiology studies.
